Chapter 5

When sharp slants of the sun shining through the window found Darlene in her room the next morning, she opened her eyes with a smile. She felt a certain lightness, like a thousand operatic voices were performing in her head. She felt so giddy with joy that she felt like dancing. She closed her eyes again and stretched. Turning over, she felt a presence, as if eyes were staring at her on the bed. She swiveled around quickly and found Carol staring at her.

“Carol?” she called, “What are you doing?”

“You’re happy whenever you’re with Doug and sad whenever you go to see Duane. Why did you agree to see him again?”

“Oh, come on, not this morning,” Darlene said, covering her face with her palms.

“You were like someone walking on the moon when you came back last night. You were so happy even Dad asked what had come over you. What does Duane have that Doug can’t offer you?”

“Doug isn’t mine, Carol. We may be good for each other on paper, but I don’t know his intentions. Duane, on the other hand, made the payment on the house for us. What’s a little cheating—can’t I forgive that?”

“He didn’t make any payments! If that is why you want to stay with him, then you don’t have to. We don’t owe him anything!”

“You don’t know that Carol. There is no other person that could have done this for us. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to be with a man because I think he paid our debt, but I wanna be sure, you know? I don’t want to just walk away like that,” Darlene said.

Carol wasn’t satisfied. It was clear from her face that she had made her choice between both men, and Duane came a distant second. It would be Doug for her at every turn, and Carol didn’t know why her sister couldn’t see that. Darlene had always had great taste and knew how to make good choices, but it seemed that she always made a poor choice when it came to Duane.

“Come on, Carol. Let’s get this day started. Christmas is here, and we will spend it in a home that is a part of us because of Duane. Don’t you think he deserves a little credit? I didn’t make him any promises, and I am not going to his home. We are just going to talk, and that’s it.”

“I just hope you know what you’re doing. This is all so jumbled in my head,” Carol replied as they walked down the stairs. She had listened to Darlene make her plans with Duane last night. The phone call had been a complete downer on her mood, but Darlene had promised to see Duane, and her kid sister wasn’t happy with that promise. Even a blind man could see the chemistry that existed between Doug and herself.

“What the hell do I know?” she muttered under her breath.
